What it is
A living-fossil tree with fan leaves. Standardized leaf extracts are a supplement market. Fallen female fruits stink; the inner seed is a traditional food that must be cooked and is not a casual forage.
From the existing encyclopedia
Ginkgo shows up in regional spice blends, apothecary tea chests, and slow-cooked pots where aroma matters as much as flavor. Store in a cool, dark cupboard in an airtight jar; label with purchase date. Mix into lentil, bean, or whole-grain bowls for texture and flavor depth. When substituting dried Ginkgo for fresh, use about one-third the volume and bloom in fat or hot water before adding acid or dairy.
Edible portions
- cooked seed (traditional, limited)
Absence of a portion from this list means it is not treated as food here — not that every other part is toxic.
Growing
- Climate. 4–9 tree
- Light. Full sun
- Soil. Urban-tolerant, well-drained
- Planting. Male clones if you do not want smelly fruit.
Traditional uses
Traditional use Cooked seed in East Asian cooking
AAA interpretation Traditional use is not automatically evidence, and evidence is not automatically a shopping recommendation.
Supplement relevance
AAA interpretation Ginkgo leaf products are supplements. This page does not treat street trees as pharmacies.
If you are considering a bottle, use the food-first tools rather than a social-media urgency loop.
Safety
- Raw seed is not a snack. Leaf extracts are supplements with specific product chemistry — not something you improvise from yard trees. Do not eat ornamental ‘ginkgo supplements’ you made yourself.
